From
experimenting with art projects at a very young age with her artist grandmother
to practicing freelance graphic design as a recent college graduate, Mary
Milam Berkley has always filled her life with art.
She grew up observing the world with a creative mind and an eye for subtle
detail - not a caterpillar, curtain pattern, or sidewalk crack escaped
her. After gaining exposure to the aesthetics of print media through the
magazines her father was an editor of, she realized the art of design
fascinated her. This enthusiasm, along with her natural talents and vision,
inspired her to choose design as her life pursuit.
Throughout her education, Mary immersed herself in the vast forms of expression
that the visual arts provide, from screenprinting to book arts. Photography,
in particular, played a central part in her exploration of visual literacy.
Most of Mary's pieces incorporate her own photography and illustration.
Mary attended Western Washington University, in the progressive and creative
town of Bellingham, WA. There she received her Bachelor of Arts degree
from the Department of Art after completing the well-regarded Graphic
Design program. Mary's hard work and ability was rewarded by being chosen
one of nine people from Washington, Idaho, and Oregon to win an AIGA Trapeze
award for her current and diverse portfolio.
She moved to San Francisco, CA shortly after to participate in the city's
stimulating culture of design. Mary has gained a variety
of design experience through her freelance jobs creating numerous products
ranging from labels for skincare products to t-shirt design to magazine
advertising. |
